The Online Academy seeks to provide teachers with research-based as well as promising practices that can help improve results for all students with diverse learning needs. The ultimate goal is to provide teachers with information that can support instruction in general and special education classrooms.

This module, Math & Technology combines learning theory in mathematics, standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and research-based and promising practices in the areas of mathematics instruction.

Some areas discussed in the module, such as direct instruction and curriculum-based measurement, strategy instruction, and peer learning communities have extensive research histories that support their use in all academic areas. We use available research-based information to show how these practices may facilitate acquisition of math skills. Further, we provide examples of how teachers may integrate technology and research-based practices to help all students increase their success in mathematics.

Because technology evolves on nearly a daily basis, we present teachers with promising practices that employ new technology in math instruction. We provide examples of technology intensive instruction, such as the use of Videodisc or computer intensive instruction, with which many teachers may not currently be familiar. While these practices do not have the research histories found in other instructional methods, we feel that the future looks bright for integrating these technologies into all classrooms.

In sum, technology offers many tools that support teachers and students in the classroom. Tools we once considered uncommon, such as calculators, are now as common place as pencils in the classroom. It is our belief that other technologies, including computer technology, will be as common for all teachers and their students. This module examines the new possibilities that technology offers in math instruction.
