Welcome to the Alabama State Department of Education's training series on
Positive Behavioral Support. The purpose of this material is to acquaint you
with one of the professional development opportunities provided as a part of the
Lee v. Macon settlement decree. As you are aware, Lee v. Macon is a longstanding
court case that was aimed at resolving the statewide issue of racial disparities
observed in certain special education exceptionalities at the local school
district level. A Consent Decree was signed in August 2000. Terms of the
Consent Decree include the requirement that the State Department of Education
provide training for all general and special education teachers in the areas of
instructional strategies and management of behavior. The CD-ROM training
materials from the Online Academy were designed to address the mandate for
training on management of behavior. Your school has received three sets of CD's
for teachers to share. After you work through the materials, there is a required
assessment for you to complete and return to your principal as documentation of
your participation in the training. Upon completion of the assessment each
teacher will receive a professional development certificate.
I know this information will be helpful in teaching your classes and hopefully it
will make your job easier. We appreciate all your good work and efforts to
improve Alabama's schools and to comply with the mandates of the settlement
decree.
